Eusebio (di Jacopo di Cristoforo) da San Giorgio

(b Perugia, between 1465 and 1470; d Perugia, after 1539). Italian painter and sculptor. The son of an apothecary, he was a pupil of Perugino. His work reveals the influence not only of the young Raphael but also of Bernardino Pinturicchio, who often employed him as his journeyman. In 1493 Eusebio received payment from the monastery of S Pietro, Perugia, for a panel (untraced) depicting St Benedict. He was treasurer of the Perugian painters’ guild for the first term of 1494, and in 1496 he took a year’s lease on a workshop in the parish of S Maria del Mercato, Perugia, with Berto di Giovanni, Sinibaldo Ibi, Lattanzio di Giovanni ( fl 1484; d 1534) and Lodovico di Angelo ( fl 1481–1522). His earliest surviving work of importance is the Adoration of the Magi (Perugia, G.N. Umbria) executed for the Oddi Chapel in S Agostino, Perugia. The year MDV or MDVI is inscribed on the hem of the Virgin’s robe. The crowded procession of figures and the gentle, finely drawn landscape with the characteristic arched rock testify strongly to the influence of Pinturicchio. Subsequently, in company with Matteo Balducci ( fl 1509–54), Giovan Battista Caporali and Giovanni di Francesco Ciambella ( fl 1495–1510), Eusebio assisted Pinturicchio with the frescoes (1502–8) for the Piccolomini Library, Siena Cathedral.
