Esturmio, Hernando de [Storm; Sturm, Ferdinand]
(b Zieriksee; fl 153756; d ?Seville). Netherlandish painter, active in Spain. Arriving in Seville in 1537, he became a prolific and successful artist. His work was, however, conservative in nature, and the use of prints (a standard practice among painters in Seville) and the help of workshop assistants reinforced this aspect. His style, formed in his native land in the 1520s, displays the mixture of Netherlandish and Italian elements characteristic of northern Renaissance masters such as Jan van Scorel and Maarten van Heemskerck. Esturmios earliest dated work is the altarpiece of St Peter (1539; Arcos de La Frontera, S Pedro). Other significant paintings include the altarpiece (1548), with the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi and images of saints, in the chapel of the university in Osuna and the Allegory of the Immaculate Conception (1555; Osuna, Colegiata, chapel of the tombs of the duques de Osuna). His most important work is the altarpiece of the Evangelists (15535; Seville Cathedral, Capilla de los Evangelistas). Its main panels, the Mass of St Gregory (based on the woodcut of 1511 by Albrecht Dürer) and the Resurrection of Christ, exemplify Esturmios dry, nervous and rather mannered style. The predella panels, especially those depicting female saints, are given a softer treatment. The panel depicting SS Justa and Rufina contains a view of the old Giralda, the cathedral tower, in the background.
