Engebrechtsz., Cornelis

(b 1460–65; d between 11 Feb and 26 Aug 1527). North Netherlandish painter. Archival research by Bangs has established that he probably was born earlier than 1468, the birthdate given by van Mander; the earlier date would allow Cornelis to have reached majority (25 years) when he married, c. 1484. His wife was Elysabeth Pietersdr., who bore him three daughters and three sons, the latter of whom all became painters: PIETER CORNELISZ. KUNST, Cornelis Cornelisz. Kunst (1493–1544) and Lucas Cornelisz. de Cock (1495–1552). Cornelis Engebrechtsz. may have travelled between 1482 and 1487, but after 1487 his name appears regularly in Leiden tax and militia company records, making it unlikely that he spent long sojourns in Antwerp or Brussels, as proposed by various scholars. At his death he had amassed a considerable estate, to judge by the inheritance quarrels that broke out. His wife was described as a widow on 26 August 1527.
