Enderle, Johann Baptist
(b Ulm-Söflingen, 15 June 1725; d Donauwörth, 15 Feb 1798). German painter. He was presumably trained by his uncle, Anton Enderle (170061), whose works include the ceiling frescoes in the Pfarrkirche built by Dominikus Zimmermann at Günzburg. Johann Baptist arranged to work under Franz Martin Kuen c. 1750, and it may be assumed that he visited the Augsburg academy under Johann Georg Bergmüller. In 1755 he married Theresia, widow of the painter Johann Benedikt Reismiller (d 1753/4) in Donauwörth and took over his predecessors workshop and clientele. The frescoes in St Stephan, Kirchdorf (1753), St Clemens, Herbertshofen (1754) and St Martin, Schwabmühlhausen (1759) show Enderle developing his own unmistakable style, with a pale, light palette and fine detailed line. His chief works are at Unterrammingen (Pfarrkirche St Magnus, 1769), Zaisertshofen (Pfarrhaus, 1770), Scheppach (Wallfahrtskirche Allerheiligen, 177071), Mainz (Augustinerkirche, 1771/2), Mainz (St Ignaz, 1773/4; substantially overpainted 1902) and Oberndorf am Neckar (former Augustinerklosterkirche, 1776/8). Although Enderle was slightly influenced by Neo-classicism, he was not able to adapt to the new style: his later work shows rather the influence of Matthäus Günther and Gottfried Bernhard Göz. This retardative quality can be seen in the former Deutschordenshaus in Donauwörth (1780) and the Augustinerkirche in Lauingen (1791).
