Elstrack [Elstracke], Renold [Renier]
(b London, before 5 Nov 1570; d ?London, after 1630). English engraver. The son of a glazier, his earliest signed works are three maps for Jan Huygen van Linschotens Discourse of Voyages into ye Easte and West Indies (1598), made in collaboration with William Rogers (i), with whom Elstrack may have trained. By 1604 such line engravings as James I in Parliament show his work had lost its early awkwardness and that he was under the growing influence of the de Passe family of engravers. A full-length of Henry, Prince of Wales, probably engraved soon after Henrys death in 1612, a double portrait of James I and Anne of Denmark (c. 1604) and equestrian portraits of the Infanta Maria of Spain (c. 161820) and Charles I (c. 161415, 1620 and 1625) are among his best works.
