(1) François Eisen
(b Brussels, c. 1695; d Paris, 1778). Painter. He served his apprenticeship (17056) with Pierre Roger in Valenciennes and in 1716 was admitted master of the Confrérie de St Luc there. In the same year he married Marguerite Gainse; one of their seven children was (2) Charles Eisen. François Eisen worked for the religious houses of Valenciennes, most notably for the abbey of Vicoigne, making eight paintings (untraced) for the refectory in 1729. He moved to Brussels c. 1732 and joined his son Charles in Paris c. 1745. In later life he painted numerous genre pictures in a light-hearted Flemish manner (e.g. The Swing, 1770; Bourg-en-Bresse, Mus. Ain); these were probably made specifically for dealers.
