(2) Etienne Dumonstier II
(b c. 1540; d Paris, 23 Oct 1603). Painter and draughtsman, son of (1) Geoffroy Dumonstier. He worked for Henry II, Catherine de Medici and the last Valois kings, and later for Henry IV. He is mentioned in the royal accounts as peintre et valet de chambre from 1569 to 1599. In 1570 Catherine sent him as a diplomat to Vienna, where he probably drew a portrait of Elizabeth of Austria, with a view to her marriage to Charles IX. In 1586 he received an annuity of 1330 livres, greater even than that received by François Clouet. The Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, possesses about ten portrait drawings by him, which are finely executed, with light modelling and delicate colouring; those of Charles de Lorraine, Duc de Mayenne and the Duchesse de Joyeuse are the most noteworthy.
