(2) Nikolaos Doxaras
(b Kalamata, 1705; d Zakynthos, 2 March 1775). Son of (1) Panagiotes Doxaras. He lived at various times in Zakynthos, Leuchada, Corfu and Kephalonia. A protégé of Johann Matthias, Graf von der Schulenburg, he studied military engineering and painting in Venice from 1729 to 1738. The Heavenly Vault (ceiling) of the Phaneromene church in Zakynthos (17549) and the Heavenly Vault of the church of St Menas in Leuchada (1762) represent opposing poles of his work, which was influenced by the Italian Baroque. His output was limited because of his other activities, though several of his works have been destroyed. His paintings of the Death of the Virgin and the Assumption of the Virgin (17549) were destroyed in the earthquakes on Zakynthos (1953), while the Birth of the Virgin (Zakynthos, Zakynthos Mus.), from the same group, as well as three small sketches for it (Athens, N. Lib.), survive. Another group was lost in a later fire. The Bridegroom (1756; Athens, Loverdos priv. col.) can also be attributed to him.
Part of the Doxaras family
