(1) Pietro del Donzello
(b Florence, 1452; d Florence, 24 Feb 1509). He is first mentioned in the 1480 catasto. He was a pupil of Giusto di Andrea and worked mainly as a craftsman, painting standards and shields. His earliest documented work is a standard with an allegorical figure of Lombardy (1483; untraced) for the Sala dellUdienza in the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence. In 1488 he may have been in Naples working on the decoration at Poggio Reale (see (2) below). He is also known to have painted standards and shields for the Opera del Duomo between 1503 and 1507, and benches for the refectory of the Ospedale di S Matteo in 1506. His only documented paintings were made for Florence, a Crucifixion with Two Angels (1506; untraced) for the Ospedale di S Matteo and an Annunciation (in situ) for one of the Frescobaldi chapels in Santo Spirito. The latter suggests that he was a modest, graceful follower of the style of Domenico Ghirlandaio and Lorenzo di Credi.
