Deutsch [Alleman; Manuel].

Swiss family of artists, writers and politicians. (1) Niklaus Manuel Deutsch I was the son of the apothecary Emanuel Alleman, whose family came from Chieri in Piedmont, and Margaretha Fricker, natural daughter of Dr Thüring Fricker, town clerk of Berne. Niklaus had six children by his wife Katharina Frisching, of whom (2) Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch and Niklaus Manuel Deutsch II (1528–88) became artists. Niklaus I adopted the surname Manuel, but ‘Alleman’ lingered in the translation ‘Deutsch’; for example, Niklaus Manuel I usually signed his works with the monogram NMD, for Deutsch.
