Demetriades, Kostas
(b Stanimaka, Eastern Rumelia [now Asenovgrad, Bulgaria], 1881; d Athens, 28 Oct 1943). Greek sculptor. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and from 1904 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; he lived in Paris until 1930, before returning to Athens to become director of the School of Fine Arts. In France he underwent the influence of Auguste Rodin both in his choice of psychologically expressive themes and in his presentation of the human body in fragmentary form. He also made portraits and treated the body in action, as in Diskobolos (exh. 1924; New York, Central Park).
