(2) Henri(-Jean-Augustin) De Braekeleer
(b Antwerp, 11 June 1840; d Antwerp, 20 July 1888). Son of (1) Ferdinand De Braekeleer. He was the nephew of Henri Leys. Having already been taught drawing by his father and uncle, he entered the Antwerp Academie in 1854. He learnt figure drawing and drawing from the Antique from Jan Verschaeren (180363) and landscape from Jacob Jacobs (181279). He remained a pupil there until 1861, becoming friendly with fellow-student Jan Stobbaerts, who shared his scorn for the Romantic conventions inculcated by the Academie.
