De Albertis, Sebastiano
(b Milan, 14 Jan 1828; d Milan 28 Nov 1897). Italian painter. In 1848 he abandoned his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, to participate in the Milanese uprising against Austrian domination. He also joined Garibaldi on his 1859, 1860 and 1866 campaigns. This period marked a transformation in De Albertiss style and subject-matter. While under the influence of Francesco Hayez and Domenico Induno at the academy, he produced a series of history paintings, the most notable of which was the Death of Ferruccio and Gavinana (1852; untraced) for Conte Giulio Litta. Under the influence of Risorgimento ideals his subjects became increasingly concerned with themes relating to the new Italy (e.g. Garibaldi at Digione, 1877; Milan, Mus. Risorgimento), or, as in the work of Giovanni Fattori, Michele Cammarano and the Induno brothers, based on his military experiences, for example Charge of the Carabinieri at Pastrengo (exh. Turin 1880; Rome, Mus. Carabinieri). Simultaneously, De Albertiss palette became more clearly influenced by the changes brought about by the Scapigliati artists, and his use of colour and light grew more open and atmospheric.
