Dario, Giovanni Antonio

(b c. 1630; d St Florian, 8 March 1702). Italian architect, mason and sculptor, active in Austria. He is recorded as having been in Salzburg in the 1650s, when he completed the towers (1652–5) of Salzburg Cathedral, providing them with the polygonal caps that are a feature of the town’s skyline. In 1659 Dario supervised the construction of the fountain at the Residenz in Salzburg, to a design by an unknown architect, and in the same year he was responsible for the plasterwork in the side chapels of the cathedral. The building of the loggias (1658–63) in front of the cathedral not only created a link between the porch of the cathedral, the Residenz and St Peter’s Abbey, but also enclosed the Domplatz and lent it greater urban significance. Dario, who was in charge of the building work, is credited with being the originator of this distinguished architectural solution that displays such consistency. Dario continued to carry out work in Salzburg that he had not designed himself. In 1667 he built a fountain at the convent of Nonnberg, to designs by an unknown architect, and side chapels at the cathedral, probably to designs by Santino Solari. He also rebuilt the church (1672–9) at Seekirchen, Salzburg.
