(1) John Cousen
(b nr Bradford, 19 Feb 1804; d London, 26 Dec 1880). He was apprenticed to the animal engraver John Scott (17741828) in London and possibly was a pupil of William Finden and Edward Finden. He engraved for J. M. W. Turners Turners Annual Tours (London, 18335), W. Brockedons Illustrations of the Passes of the Alps (London, 18289), volumes of Keepsake (London, 182856), Heaths Picturesque Annual (London, 18335), R. Jenningss Landscape Annual (London, 183039) and the Oriental Annual (London, 183440). Many of the topographical volumes published by H. Fisher and G. Virtue contain his work, a number after William Henry Bartlett. Bartletts own publications also carry plates engraved by Cousen, as does John Ruskins Modern Painters (London, 184360). Thirty-two plates appeared in the Art Journal between 1849 and 1866. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 18634 and engraved three large plates, Mercury and Herse (1842; priv. col.) after Turner and two after Clarkson Stanfield (e.g. Morning after the Wreck, 1844; Sheffield, Graves A.G.).
