Costanzi [Costansi].

Italian family of artists. Giovanni Costanzi (?1674–1754) was active in Rome as a gem-engraver. His engraved diamond showing the Head of Nero was noted by Stosch (1724) and Mariette (1750). Among other commissions, he executed a chalcedony intaglio of the Head of Gordian for Frederick II, King of Prussia. Of his three sons, (1) Placido Costanzi was a painter; Tommaso Costanzi (?1700–1747) was a gem-engraver, highly esteemed by Mariette and Giovanni Pichler, although none of his works is known; and (2) Carlo Costanzi had an ambitious and successful career as a gem-engraver.
