(2) Matthijs [Matthys] Cock
(b Antwerp, c. 1510; d Antwerp, before 20 March 1548). Painter and draughtsman, son of (1) Jan Wellens de Cock. He must have become a master before 1540, since he accepted Willem van Santvoort as a pupil in that year. According to van Mander, Matthijs had already travelled to Italy before this date. Possibly he stayed there with his brother (3) Hieronymus Cock, who was mentioned as living in Rome in 1545 and 1548. Van Mander also claimed that Matthijs was the teacher of Jan Keynooghe (1520after 1570) and Jacob Grimmer.
