(3) Matteo di Cione
(b Florence, c. 132030; d Florence, ?before 6 May 1390). Sculptor and marble supplier, brother of (1) Andrea di Cione and (2) Nardo di Cione. He enrolled in the guild of masons and carpenters on 7 July 1358. Documents show he worked (7 Feb24 Dec 1359) in the masons workshop of Orvieto Cathedral as an assistant to his brother Andrea, and he may have been involved in executing the tabernacle for the reliquary of the Holy Corporal. With Andrea and (4) Jacopo di Cione he is named as beneficiary under the will (21 May 1365) of his brother Nardo. On 27 March 1381 the quality of a piece of tracery supplied by Matteo and Leonardo Masi ( fl 136681) for Orsanmichele in Florence was judged to be poor; the tracery, probably that in the middle or western arcade of the south side, need not have been by the masters themselves but may have been subcontracted. From 6 June 1382 to 15 November 1386 Matteo, with Leonardo Masi, is recorded by a total of 12 receipts as one of the most important suppliers of marble to the workshop of Florence Cathedral. This does not, however, justify the assumption that Matteo worked exclusively as a marble supplier and never as a sculptor. On 6 May 1390 his brother Jacopo was sent to Pisa by the Florence Cathedral workshop to settle a matter concerning a debt and at the same time was instructed to accompany a transportation of marble to Florence in place of Matteo. This is the last documentary mention of Matteo; his replacement by Jacopo might indicate his death.
