Bouchardon.

French family of artists. Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon (1667–1742) was an important craftsman in Burgundy and Champagne, working as a sculptor, architect and gilder. He was apparently assisted at times by his daughter Jacquette Bouchardon (1694–1756). His elder son (1) Edme Bouchardon was thought by contemporary connoisseurs to be the greatest sculptor and draughtsman in France, dedicated to an ideal of classical severity allied with increasing naturalism, though this opinion is now thought exaggerated. His most important work was an equestrian monument to Louis XV (destr. 1792) in Paris, which was not complete at his death. His brother (2) Jacques-Philippe Bouchardon spent the bulk of his career in Sweden, where he produced some attractive portraits and influenced the development of a Rococo style in the decorative arts.
