(1) Jakob von der Auwera

(b Mechelen, 17 Feb 1672; d Würzburg, 1760). Around 1700 he arrived in Würzburg, where he entered the service of the Prince–Bishop, Johann Philipp von Greiffenklau, and became court sculptor. In 1706–8 he executed a fountain with a group of four river gods for the gardens of the Juliusspital. In 1715–19 he decorated the portal of the Jesuit college and in 1716–17 the façade of the Neumünster, both in Würzburg. The statues flanking the portal of St Peter, Würzburg, are also ascribed to him. Commissions from other parts of Franconia included the Virgin (c. 1720) over the high altar of the parish church of Hammelburg and the Trinity Column (1728) in the market-place of Lengfurt. In 1728–9 he produced the altar figures and the side altars for the parish church of St Mauritius, Wiesenheid. In 1749 he carved the choir-stalls for St Kilian Cathedral in Würzburg. In the same year he produced the huge fountain with a group of Hercules Wrestling with Antaeus in the garden of the former Cistercian monastery at Ebrach, a work showing the influence of Bernini.
