Astete y Concha, Luis

(b Lima, 1866; d Lima, 12 Jan 1914). Peruvian painter. He studied at the Academia de S Fernando in Madrid, where he lived from 1883 to 1893; his friends there included Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, a fellow student. On his return to Lima in 1893 he painted portraits and for 14 years taught drawing at the Academia Concha. He also worked as an illustrator for the review Prisma. In 1897 he was awarded first prize at the Exposición de Lima and was commissioned to execute a series of portraits of Peruvian personalities; these were later destroyed in a fire at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lima. In addition to landscapes and portraits he executed genre scenes and allegorical paintings.
