Arsenalists [Pol. Arsenalowcy].
Term used to refer to the participants in the Ogólnopolska wystawa mlodej plastyki (Polish exhibition of young artists), which was held in the Arsenal, Warsaw, between July and September 1955 and had as its theme the slogan Against WarAgainst Fascism. The exhibition was organized on the occasion of the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students, the first such large-scale international gathering following the period of Stalinist isolation in Poland. The exhibition catalogue lists 249 exhibiting artists and 499 pictures, graphic works and sculptures. The idea of the exhibition was conceived in 1954 by the painters Jan Dziedziora, Marek Oberländer and Jacek Sienicki and the art historian Elzbieta Grabska, all graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw. All the exhibitors made their débuts during the period of Polish Socialist Realism (195054). Setting themselves against the imposed doctrine, the organizers resolved during the growing thaw to set up an all-Polish review of the work of young people. Most young artists and exhibitors regarded it as the first demonstration against Socialist Realism, while its enemies saw it as being a more refined continuation of Stalinist doctrine because of the states sponsorship of the event.
