Architecta.
Finnish association of women architects, founded in 1942. The first female architect to graduate with a degree in Finland was Signe Homborg (18621916), who trained as an extra student at the Polytechnic Institute of Helsinki from 1887 to 1890. By the mid-1980s there were some 500 women in a profession numbering 1500 practitioners, and the foundation of Architecta, the first such national womens architectural association, marked the growing importance of women in the profession. Noted members have included Elna Kiljandend (18891970), who mostly designed interiors and furniture; Kerttu Rytkönen (b 1895), who advanced a Nordic classical style of building; Elsi Borg (18931958), designer of numerous ecclesiastical buildings; and Märta Blomstedt (18991982), an influential designer of Functionalist architecture. Individual practitioners found great success in their professional careers: Martta Martikainen-Ypä (b 1904), who designed factories, schools, hospitals, housing areas and offices throughout Finland, received no less than 29 awards in international competitions between 1930 and 1960.
