Gallery Hopping on Thursdays:
June 6, 2013

Observation, memory, and imagination reign in the exhibitions we are looking at this week. In New York, Artist Wolf Kahn reminisces and interprets the New England landscape in a painterly amalgam of color and line. In Maine, viewers are invited to reflect upon the works of three painters who employ abstraction to shift perspectives and re-shape natural imagery.

At age 85, Wolf Kahn (American/German, b.1927) offers yet another assortment of canvases brimming with the light-hearted colors that have become synonymous with the painter, along with pieces that explore a deeper color palette. This selection of new works, presented by Chelsea gallery Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe, and completed, in its entirety, at the artist’s Manhattan studio, demonstrates Kahn’s natural ability to transfer impressions of New England seasons onto canvas and solidify his vocation as a colorist. In Evening off Route 9, New Hampshire (2012), supple and playfully–textured foliage is outlined in shades of eggplant, denoting the artist’s understanding of the darker end of the color spectrum and the invigorating qualities it grants to the scenery. In the aptly titled Furthest Glow (2011), a grove sewn in greens, browns, and oranges stands against a narrowly visible blue backdrop and beneath a gleaming aura of orange. Kahn’s inimitable technique in rendering nature, with traces of human presence now and then, as in the work entitled In a Village (2011), suggests an unquestionable maturity of skill. However, the artist gives himself room to grow and further strengthen his craft.

Wolf Kahn will be on view from June 6 to July 26 at 525 W. 22nd Street, New York, NY.

The exhibition entitled Surface, Light, and Structure at Elizabeth Moss Gallery brings together works by Frances Hynes, Lyle Salmi (American), and Richard Keen (American, b.1971) that push the boundaries of representational painting. Glimpses of land and sea dissolve in the highly textural surfaces of Hynes’s works, as seen in Sea (2013). Salmi expresses his mastery of light with atmospheric compositions that are nearly stripped of tangible forms, emphasizing a delicacy in painting style. In his pieces, Keen redefines coastal Maine by breaking up the landscape into both jagged and undulating shapes. Synchronization is achieved in this grouping of paintings through the careful study of nature and the artists’ interest in the material and visual autonomy of paint.

Surface, Light, and Structure will be on view from June 6 to July 21 at 251 US Route 1, Falmouth, ME.
