Opening Reception: Thursday, May 24, 6 - 9 pm
Julie M. Gallery is pleased to announce a solo show of works by Itamar Jobani. Jobani’s work has been internationally recognized for its conceptual lucidity, informed by a background in fine art, film studies, and philosophy. Jobani's upcoming solo exhibition will focus on recent sculptural work, some of which will be created on-site during the week prior to the show. This new series is informed by a conceptual framework exploring/reinventing/subverting the life-work of German photographer August Sander, titled Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts (People of the 20th Century) which spanned 1911 through 1950. Jobani interfaces with the Sander's photographic aspiration to visually map and quantify his sociocultural environs. Playing with Sander's attempts to document quintessential archetypes within 20th century society (for example The Policeman, The Farmer, The Urbanite), Jobani experiments with mixed media such as mirror, aluminum, resin, and clay, updating the series to reflect the complexities of the 21st C., with an eye to the dual utopian and absurd underpinnings of this endeavor. Jobani is an exciting sculpture-installation artist on the cusp of mid-career status, working in Brooklyn, New York. Recently, he was awarded the prestigious 2010 Vierter Stock residency in Berlin, following critical acclaim of his solo show at Volta NY, 2008.
