In the presence of the artist
The work Chandelier is based on a tradition of monumental objects: classical amphora, elaborate candelabra made of precious metals and crystal prisms. Objects that, for hundreds of years, have played an important role as social markers. Size, weight and quality of manufacture indicate wealth and success and such items are designed to be displayed as indications of power.
The work contrasts with the supposed ideals that such objects sought to represent. Weight and valuable materials here take second place to design and details that have now been allowed to overflow and to assume new proportions.
In my attempt to mass produce items using a complex manual process for making moulds and casting polyurethane foam, individual disparities occur which are then exaggerated, repeated and, when full control has been abandoned, given over to the material´s own will.
