Tyler Rollins Fine Art is pleased to present Alter Egos, a group exhibition of works that center on icons of the artist’s own self. Whether literally depicting alternate personae of the artist, or more obliquely referencing motifs central to the artist’s sense of self, these works are deeply personal yet resist overt self-revelation.
Working in a wide range of styles and media – painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textiles – this diverse group of artists from eight Southeast Asian countries proffers visions of themselves that are at once intimate and distancing, as if seen through a veil. Sometimes we see the artist adopting a disguise or playing a role that acts out one aspect of his or her personality. In other works motifs or assemblages of motifs that act as stand-ins for the artist.
The expression of self identity in these works often reaches well beyond the individual, commenting on and critiquing issues of local, national, and global culture and society. The role of the individual, and of the artist in a larger context is always of concern. Yet the focus remains on the artist and his unique vision, through which the viewer, too, is invited to see something of himself.
