Shoshana Wayne Gallery is pleased to present its fifth solo exhibition of new work by Jay Davis.
Jay Davis’s works on paper entangle the imagination, with intricately layered fragments and minute details integrated into simple pictorial genres that are at once familiar, intimate, and mysterious. With each piece, the viewer’s attention engages with the sum of its parts, as well as the unified whole.
While the laborious nature of Jay Davis’s work is immediately evident, the actual methods used to fabricate them are not easily discernable. The imagery found in such pieces as Lion, Fish, and Root reference more than the physical attributes of floral and fauna, they suggest a parallel to the enigmatic existence and processes found in nature itself. Images move in and out of their roles, often occupying multiple genres and spaces. These works can become portraits, landscapes, interiors, and abstractions all at once.
Jay Davis offers a formal and individual narrative that reflects both the simplicity and complexity of our palpable and psychological spaces, which ultimately signals our malleable relation to the world around us.
Jay Davis’s work has been exhibited at the FLAG Foundation in New York City, Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, New Jersey, and also in galleries worldwide.
Jay Davis lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
