About the Artist
Scott White Contemporary Art is pleased to present Colors Desire; a solo exhibition of Gregg Renfrow’s newest work. Light is the command ingredient in Renfrow’s polymer and pigment paintings. Raw pigment is carefully layered onto a cast acrylic ‘canvas,’ flooding the surface with translucent color. Renfrow’s focus on subtle variations in earth tones and the transition between warm and cool tones echo both the simplicity of minimalism and the sensuality of abstract expressionism. Colors Desire will be available for viewing at the La Jolla, California gallery beginning Saturday, November 10th through Saturday, December 21st, 2012. A reception for the artist will be held in the gallery on Saturday, November 10th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Renfrow earned his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute in 1972. Renfrow’s inspiration behind his pieces stems from the euphoria he experienced upon setting his eyes on Raphael’s Saint Catherine of Alexandria at the National Gallery in London. With his luminous works (influenced by Minimalism, Abstraction and the California Light and Space movement) he explores the qualities of light. He aims to evoke a similar reaction from the viewer. His signature style consists of pouring polymer and pigment on large sheets of cast acrylic in layers, creating an organic quality to his work.
A recipient of the American Council for the Arts Fine Arts Award (1982), Renfrow’s work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions along with a wide selection of group exhibitions throughout the nation.
