Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Richard Gate. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, September 8, 4 - 6 pm.

For this exhibition, Richard Gate brings together a series of intimately scaled works on paper. Each 15" x 11" sheet of heavy Japanese paper holds a crisp gathering of imagery, applied using a combination of printmaking, xerox transfer and painting. Drawing from science, popular culture, ancient history, technology, mathematics, folk art, physics, and astronomy, the works offer a unique perspective on pattern, symbol and language. Each piece opens a window into, and creates playful mash-ups of the natural world and human civilization.

Gate’s arrangement of graphics and imagery create a compositional and narrative rhythm. Egyptian and American Indian hieroglyphs mingle with images of subatomic particles, astronomical symbols, sound waves, hard edge forms and colored panels, showing the narrow divide between ancient cultures, the natural world and modern technology. Moreover, Gate’s illustrations and his own markings work together as formal anchors and compositional tools for short, visual stories.

Richard Gate received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He splits his time between the lake country of Ontario, Canada and Utah. His year-round immersion in the North American natural environment fuels his artistry and interest in the land.
