Gallery Reception: Saturday, May 19, 6:00-8:00 pm
The Richard Levy Gallery is please to present John Chervinsky: Frames of Reference. This exhibition samples photographs from two series, An Experiment in Perspective and Studio Physics. Bringing a host of visual, intellectual, and scientific tools to the table, Chervinsky's masterful photographs are explorations of perception and time. They question not only what we see but how we see.
Studio Physics is a new conceptual series which merges photography and painting to create photographs from still lifes. First, composing and photographing a still life comprised of ephemeral objects, Chervinsky crops a section of the image and sends it to a painting factory in China. Once the anonymous artist in China completes an oil painting of the cropped section, it is sent through the mail to his studio in Somerville, MA. He then inserts it back into the time altered still life and re-photographs it. Chervinsky brings a scientific eye to image making in An Experiment in Perspective, exploring visual perspective, how we see, and draws an analogy between visual perception and human knowledge.
Images for Frames of Reference can be found on our website at www.levygallery.com and are also are available on request.
