Kaoli Mashio (born Japan 1976) graduated in 2011 from the Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf, where she studied under the painter Peter Doig. Her paintings of other worldly landscapes and abstract portraits represent an individual vision centred somewhere between dreams and reality. A concept that has multiple meanings for her, these ‘dreams’ take on the form of marks upon the canvas, marks of her own making. In creating the works, Mashio takes on the role of crafting her own dreams into a visual form. Her work has recently been selected by Peter Doig and Hilton Als, for the exhibition Self-Consciousness at VeneKlasen/Werner, Berlin.
