Santa Fe, NM USA

Opening Reception: Friday October 19th, 5-8pm

The inaugural exhibition of Old Master paintings at Peyton Wright Gallery features dramatic works created in Europe from the mid-1500s to approximately 1800; many dating from the sixteenth century. Emanating from the Baroque period, the works exhibit rich, deep color and intense light and shadows in contrast with the thematic precedent of the Rennaisance Period dating from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. Prevailing themes of the pre-nineteenth century period include devotion, historical events, ancient mythology, landscapes, still lives and portraits. Infused with layers of meaning and purpose, the stories told in the works incoporate an intriguing mix of politics and intewoven propaganda using complex allegories and symbolism that continue to occupy our collective consciousness today.
