Noho Modern is pleased to present “Robert Hansen: Selected Works, 1957-1987.” With this show Hansen reemerges after a nearly twenty-year break from exhibiting. The show begins June 1st, 2006, with an opening reception to be held at the gallery on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006, from 6 to 10 pm. The exhibition will continue through July 15th, 2006. Noho Modern is located at 11225 Magnolia blvd, North Hollywood CA, 91601, tel: 818-505-1297; www.nohomodern.com.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to present the work of established artists such as Robert Hansen. Hansen’s body of work maintains its sense of immediacy and relevance, despite the passage of time”, says gallery co-proprietor Jeremy Petty. Adds Thomas Hayes, co-proprietor, “Hansen’s work introduces exciting visual elements that marry primal imagery with timeless themes.”

Influenced by David Alfaro Sisqueiros, the great Mexican muralist who encouraged artists to use the latest materials, Hansen adopted Duco, an industrial enamel developed for appliances and automobiles, as his primary material. The viscosity of the new material inspired experimentation in the various techniques of applying paint to a surface, allowing Hansen to create extremely textured pieces that convey a sense of complexity, while forcing the visual elements of the paintings, primarily the human figure, into elemental, raw forms.

Beginning with his first show at Ferus Gallery in the late 1950’s, Hansen’s work was regularly exhibited and well-received. Hansen went on to show at MOMA, the Whitney, LACMA, and numerous Los Angeles galleries, notably the Robert Comara Gallery. His works were also included in Painting USA: The Figure, held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1961; the Whitney Annual, New York, in 1962 and 1964, and the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, in 1961 and 1966.

NOHO MODERN is a gallery of 20th Century decorative and fine arts. The gallery is intended to present the works of emerging and established artists from the mid-20th century through the present, as well as original modern furnishings and accessories.
