Kim Foster Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of new paintings by Korean artist, Moon Beom. The paintings are all from a series titled “possible worlds“ that are landscape based semi-abstractions. The painterly surface is more compressed, visualizing the chaos of infinite space where reality and illusion crisscross.

The swirls of oilstick made with quick movements of his fingers and the sharp lines created with a pen agitate the surface of the paintings. Shapes are transformed into unexpected landscapes of Asiatic emotions and imaginative vegetations, inviting the viewer into a new land of vitality. The new series delivers a strong visual metaphor of endless imagination and illusion. Moon’s phantasmagoric vision is of a diachronic nature, arriving from the precise present, the mnemonically obsolete and the prophetic future. The overall effect is an intriguing geography of fragmented memories and sites yet to be explored.

Moon Beom is among Korea’s most technically adept painters at creating hybrid works, preserving traditional landscape drawing while at the same time vigorously experimenting with Western techniques and style. His approach has been to adopt new materials and a more abstract vocabulary, yet retain the spirituality and craftsmanship that long characterized ink-on-paper drawings of his native land.

Moon’s work has been reviewed in Art in America, Artforum, Tema Celeste, Art Press and Sculpture. His work appeared in the inaugural exhibit for the Chelsea Art Museum and at the Kresge Art Museum. He resides in Seoul, Korea where he is represented by PKM gallery.
