Back when Canyon Road was a haven for local artists seeking affordable studio space, the street was alive with creative ferment and the camaraderie born of common dreams and uncommon talent. The artistic excitement remains. Hunter Kirkland Contemporary honors this collective artistic spirit by opening the spring art season, our tenth, with a group show featuring new work by three Santa Fe Painters.

Master colorist Rick Stevens paints exquisitely wrought studies of shape and shadow, emptiness and light. A blend of abstraction and landscape painting, this new work probes the boundaries of reality and perception, fusing complexity and simplicity into a satisfying, stunningly beautiful whole.

In the accomplished hands of Peter Burega, nature is depicted as a juxtaposition of opposites that alternately soothes, stimulates, challenges, and reassures. He imbues his abstracted interpretations of the creative clash between the built environment and the natural world with a strong sense of motion and emotion, infusing them with color and energy that propel the paintings into new dimensions of contemplation and arousal.

Land and sky merge in a wash of vibrant color in Gregory Frank Harris’s paintings, which bear elements of tonalism, abstraction, minimalism and impressionism. These singular canvases bring figurative and nonfigurative elements into easy harmony through the artist’s expert manipulation of light and shadow. Harris illuminates the landscape from within and without, capturing that magical glow unique to the Western mountains and mesas.

The show continues through May 13th, 2012.
