Washington DC – Hemphill opens Viewing Rm. on Saturday, January 15, 2011, with a public reception from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through March 26, 2011.

Hemphill’s exhibitions typically focus on works by artists and artist estates that the gallery represents, punctuated by occasional thematic exhibitions addressing political or social issues. Often not seen by visitors are the artworks moving through the back rooms of the gallery. In 2004 a relocation to our current 14th Street address allowed us to design office and private viewing spaces for the display of artworks of special interest to individual collectors, pieces representing rare acquisition opportunities, and works that we–the staff–find to be uniquely powerful. From time to time someone wanders into our private spaces and becomes transfixed by what he or she otherwise would not see. Viewing Rm. aims to share the back room experience with a larger audience by bringing a selection of those artworks out into the exhibition spaces of the gallery.

Viewing Rm. includes paintings, mixed media, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and video installation. Works by Eugène Atget, Christopher Brooks, Margaret Burroughs, Colby Caldwell, William Christenberry, Steven Cushner, Don Donaghy, Thomas Downing, John Dreyfuss, Godfrey Frankel, Paul Fusco, Sam Gilliam, Alfred Jensen, Jacob Kainen, William Klein, Sally Mann, Tanya Marcuse, Mingering Mike, Joseph Mills, Portia Munson, Martin Puryear, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Richenburg, Robin Rose, Evgenii Rukhin, Tom Sachs, August Sander, Sharon Sanderson, Alma Thomas, John Watson, William Willis.
