“Eternity, it is the voice of milk mingled with night...my text is written in white and black, in milk and night” wrote philosopher Hélene Cixous. It is through her penetrating metaphor that we attempt to lay out a framework beyond homogenizing, reductive reason.
‘Milk and Night’ is a group exhibition, which is the endeavor of four artists/curators, Anne Sherwood Pundyk, Coco Dolle, Katie Cercone, Asha Cherian; all of whom are involved in women’s collectives and impassioned by the intersections between art and feminism.
This show grows out of their feminist activity and gatherings undertaken over the past year: The Wolf Moon gathering at MoMA PS1, Sacred Nipples at the Last Brucennial and The Clitney Perennial at the Whitney Biennal.
Collectively, they share a vision for a new (art) world: The art world, as a microcosm of society, is a web of exclusionary and exploitative systems and interests. As individuals they are inspired by alternatives to a society created in the white, male, hetero-normative image. As artists they express this vision through work exploring themes of sexuality, the body, gender, eco-consciousness, nature, colonialism, race, alternative histories and mythologies
and challenges to traditional power structures. Their vision states: “We are stirred to render the invisible visible. In one another we will never be lacking.”
Alongside their pieces, they have invited their artist peers to help activate a visual conversation about new feminisms. This show is a whisper within the polyphony of intersectional feminist work.
