Karen Dana’s new paintings feature figures in ambivalent spaces that are both expansive and restraining. That duality magnifies the presence of individual subjects isolated from their context to evoke intensely personal associations. The familiarity of the scenes is as seductive as drama.
Dana leads the viewer through an initially mundane, subsequently odd territory into the depths of the collective unconsciousness. A feeling of exposure and uncertainty is enhanced by the orchestration of glances. The sense of dislocation makes palpable the inherent tensions between vulnerability and aggression, innocence and seduction, and ultimately life and death.
Together these diverse yet intimately connected paintings raise Dana’s own blend of symbolism.
