Painter Lars Elling has completed his most productive year yet. Thursday opens his solo exhibition at Gallery Brandstrup. In March awaits a U.S. comeback at one of New York's most important art galleries.
The exhibition 'Samtidig – like i nærheten', which opens at Gallery at Brandstrup on Tjuvholmen in Oslo on Thursday, February 28th, will be Lars Elling's first solo exhibition on Norwegian soil in three years. The exhibition consists of 15 new oil paintings in Elling distinct egg oil tempera technique.
-Requests from Norwegian and international collectors have been remarkably plentiful during the preparation for this exhibition. Lars Elling has a large and affluent fan base, extending both into Europe and across the United States. It's always an extraordinary event when Lars Elling shows new works for the first time, says gallery owner Kim Brandstrup. All Elling's latest solo shows have been sold out on the opening day.
-I have worked almost every day and night the past six months, in order to finish everything that will be presented in 2013. The last five or six years I have been very taken by 1600th century paintings, especially the Baroque. My pictures collect elements from theater and language, and display relationships between people, and the relations of power between them. Psychological drama in a classical setting, says Lars Elling.
Elling is one of four Norwegian artists to be presented by Galleri Brandstrup at the international art fair 'The Armory Show' in New York March 7th-10th. Joining him are Fredrik Raddum, Bjørn Båsen and Per Maning. Following the yearly most important art event in New York, is Ellings definitive U.S. comeback at Sean Kelly Gallery - regarded as one of New York's most prestigious art galleries.
-Getting to exhibit at SKNY is as huge a deal for a Norwegian artist as it would be for a Norwegian footballer try out for AC Milan. In New York you will find perhaps the world's most discerning audience. My work is measured against the best, says Elling.
