Born Helmut Herzfelde in Berlin
1905 - 1906
Served an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Wiesbaden
1908 - 1911
Studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich
1914
Studied at the Kunst- und Handwerkerschule
1915 - 1916
Inducted for active service into the German armed forces
1916
Protested the anti-British feeling in Germany by changing his name to John Heartfield, using this pseudonym for the rest of his career
John Heartfield and his brother founded the Malik Verlag publishing house in Berlin
1917
Became a follower of the Dada movement in Berlin and that same year he joined the German Communist Party (KPD)
1920
Designed his first stage sets for Erwin Piscator and Max Reinhardt
1924 - 1933
Designed illustrations for the "Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung", the Communist Party mouthpiece
