Sami Lukkarinen: Artist Profiles
Sami Lukkarinen (b. 1976) mines social media’s endless stream of images for material, capturing those that most keenly inform us about our time. Lukkarinen’s work has been based on information networks for the past 15 years, but over this time the boundless expansion of internet material has forced the artist to constrain his themes. Lukkarinen’s work is very timely. Images have acquired new dimensions with social media, from their shape to our relationships with them, as well as the emergence of the self-portrait.
Lukkarinen reflects upon the significance of an artist’s portrait when choosing from the internet’s myriad pictures of familiar artists. Lukkarinen selects images mainly based on visual factors and the picture’s overall degree of attractiveness. Also essential is the weighing of the profile pictures’ intrinsic significance: they are often self-taken pictures, or at least self-selected. The same picture recurs on computer screens several times a day, depending on its type of associated activity and social media platform.
