Helsinki, Finland

Welcome to the opening reception in the presence of the artists, Thursday, September 26, 5-7 pm.

Layers, traces, indentations, flashbacks. Artist Marianna Uutinen (b. 1961), smatters her works with strong motion and signs of physicality that prove startling to the audience.

Uutinen’s new works on exhibition at Galerie Forsblom have shifted from her earlier baroque, poetic, and emotional effect to a sharper, more conceptual expression. There is, however, some confluence with her past work. Black and white, glaring fluorescent red, and glowing warm orange hues have replaced the metallic shades of her earlier colour palette and kitsch-ish colour scheme. Uutinen compiles, she paints pleats and structures, infusing the painting’s surface with a refined impression of presence and the current moment. Painting, as a social process, takes the viewer into the painting’s material world. This is where the artist feels at home.
