Jussi Niva: Foldaway
Welcome to the opening reception
in the presence of the artists,
Thursday April 10, 2014, 5-7 pm.
The works in Jussi Niva’s (1966) painting series, Foldaway, are spatial montages: folded layers, or overlapping depictions of spatial orientations. In their presented reality, mimesis, the viewer is engaged to create one figurative event from the seemingly abstract folding of layers in multiple directions. These new works are, above all, representations of paintings’ ability to depict the concepts of space, time, and seeing.
The exhibition title, Foldaway, refers to how we as viewers perceive or identify spatiality. It refers to the moment in which we begin to perceive form in its gestalt. It always involves a mixture of things to see and feel.
