Studied drawing at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie, but taught himself how to paint. While at the academy he became a close friend of Karel Appel
1940
Emigrated to the Netherlands, subsequently naturalized
1948
Co-founded the REFLEX movement
Co-founded the CoBra or Cobra Group
1950
Moved to Paris, France
1953
Studied etching under S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris, France
1954 - 1955
Studied Ceramics with Mazzotti at Albisola Mare, Italy
1956
Awarded the Guggenheim Netherlands Prize
