EXHIBITION DETAILS:
Scott White Contemporary Art presents the group exhibition Shift.Space.Slick., featuring
sculpture by Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, De Wain Valentine and Eric Johnson. The Light
& Space movement, also known as Finish Fetish, was born in the 1960’s during a time of
aesthetic lethargy in Los Angeles. Ethereal light and expansive horizons indicative of
Californian landscapes inspired this group of artists to translate these intangible elements
into physical manifestations. Other sources of inspiration came from popular culture,
such as the rise of surfing in Malibu, and the growing car cults throughout Southern
California. The cool factor produced by these cultural phenomenons was largely due to
the use of resins, which created the slick surface of the surfboard, and the modeled
fiberglass used to customize cars. Both pastimes sported bold, flashy colors that
influenced the movement’s artists. Further accelerating the Light & Space movement were
new developments in plastics and resins, which were being utilized in the surf and car
industries. These slick forms and glossy surfaces characterize Valentine’s and Kauffman’s
work, yet each artist presents differing dialogues with the medium and their surroundings.
On the other hand, Bell’s cubes contain space and alter light, creating atmospheres that
are constantly shifting. Finally, Eric Johnson recognizes his artistic lineage, and pays
homage to the sculptors of the 1960’s and 70’s with his advancement of resin pouring techniques. Johnson represents the new generation of the Light & Space movement, reinvigorating the traditions of this group of artists with playful form and vibrant,
gleaming color.
Now, more than ever, Scott White Contemporary Art is pleased to be exhibiting
Shift.Space.Slick. as the Getty Foundation’s regional initiative Pacific Standard Time
prepares to launch in October. The Getty’s groundbreaking collaboration “brings together
more than sixty cultural institutions throughout Southern California to tell the story of
the rise of the Los Angeles art scene and its impact on the art world”. Scott White
Contemporary Art applauds these institutions by presenting its own focused study of
the Light & Space movement, featuring cornerstone artworks by the pioneers of modern
resin and glass art. We invite you to join us in celebrating the work of Larry Bell, Craig
Kauffman, De Wain Valentine and Eric Johnson.
