Art in a Mirror: The Counterproofs of Mary Cassatt November 1, 2004 through January 14, 2005Art in a Mirror: The Counterproofs of Mary Cassatt presents 48 previously unknown reverse impressions of pastels by one of America’s greatest artists. This collection of counterproofs, never before published or exhibited, opens a window onto a little-known technique and provides insight into the range of the artist’s experimentation and innovation.
A counterproof is made by placing a damp sheet of blank paper over a pastel and running the sheets through a press. The soft and delicate images created by this process demonstrate Cassatt’s evolution as an artist and her assimilation of the aesthetics of Post-Impressionism.
