THE PACE GALLERY PRESENTS ASH PAINTINGS BY ZHANG HUAN AT
ADAA: THE ART SHOW

Following in its tradition of devoting its ADAA Art Show booth to a single artist, The Pace Gallery will present an exhibition of new small-scale ash paintings by Zhang Huan (b. 1965, China). The grayscale paintings are created through a labor-intensive process in which ashes are collected from Buddhist temples in Shanghai, sorted into piles of different gradients of color and texture, and applied to linen to form images based on found and vintage photographs from the Cultural Revolution. Zhang Huan, who has worked with ash in both his paintings and sculptures, sees incense ash as infused with “all the dreams, aspirations, all the spiritual longings, all the ideas that people have.” In contrast to the artist’s typically monumental ash paintings—the largest measures over 35 feet wide—the works on view at the ADAA booth are intimately scaled, measuring no more than three feet tall or wide.
