Frances Hynes
Parting the Air

An exhibition of edgy new expressionist paintings by France Hynes is currently being shown at the June Kelly Gallery and will remain on view through January 18, 2005.
At first look, Hynes’ work suggests embryonic sketches with gestural marks, abstract shapes and seductive areas of saturated color. Upon further scrutiny of the eclectic mix of imagery — people, animals, architectural miscellany in shadowy, indistinct landscapes and shifting light in ocean views — we are steeped in the “layering of time, history and memory.”
Hynes says her paintings are “informed by my conversations with art history, the veritable mountain of images bumping into us daily as popular culture, photographs I have taken, legend, mythology, memories and experiences. These are paired and layered, suggesting strata of time and recording various events, places and people.”
Hynes, who lives and works in New York, holds a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University and a master’s from New York University. She also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and the Art Students League in Woodstock.
Hynes is represented in many collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Newark Museum, Queens Museum of Art and the Farnsworth Art Museum.
