Richard Diebenkorn: Untitled Works from 1981
October 29-November 27, 2013
A suite of never before exhibited works by Richard Diebenkorn.
In the early 1980s, Richard Diebenkorn worked consistently with the theme of clubs and spades – moving away from pure abstraction. Using these iconic symbols, Diebenkorn bridged the representational and abstract.
This rare group of work presents not only variations on a theme, but also the artist’s working process and the evolution of an idea. These six works on paper present vertical, page-filling vivid blue clubs perched on lofty red, green and black stems. Often, the artist has left traces of erasures or modifications of form, creating a ghost-like impression on the page. The graphic nature of these heraldic forms creates a bold presentation as a suite.
